Travel Days Series - Prague, Czech Republic

Our next stop in our Travel Days Series is to one of my favorite cities...Prague or Praha! There is something so magical and enchanting about this city. The red rooftops and mix of Baroque and Gothic architecture make it one of the most charming cities. If you get a chance to visit, sneak a peek from one of the amazing rooftop areas or picnic on Petrin Hill to see the incredible architecture.

For this lesson, we will be working in pencil, pen and watercolors. This is more of your “typical” travel journal prompt where we will explore the architecture of a city with minimal supplies and expressive line work with layered washes. I love these supplies when on the go. They are easily accessible and versatile and can be used for a variety of subject matters while you are traveling.

For the color palette, I looked to the architecture of Prague. I offset the reddish orange rooftops that are iconic to this city with the muted greens. My favorite palettes to use are a combination of jewel tones and earth colors so I added in a bright pink and saffron yellow and a few neutral earthy colors such as burnt siena and raw siena.

MY TRAVEL STORY TO PRAHA

I was so fortunate to travel Prague with a good friend. Her father was originally from the Czech Republic and they later moved to Montreal. We connected with a family friend of hers who was an architect. What a way to see a city through an architect’s eyes! To hear the history and back stories from a local was so incredible. Have you travelled to Prague? I would love to hear your story, kristykensinger@gmail.com.
