Imperfect Path - Art Journal Tutorial

Hello beautiful creatives! As we continue our journey through Japan I wanted to do a journal study influenced by tea ceremonies in Japan and continue our reflections on the concept of wabi sabi. Beth kempton writes

“Wabi Sabi is a state of the heart. It is felt in a moment of real appreciation - A perfect moment in an imperfect world.”
— Beth Kempton

I think we can all reflect on this idea. If we open our hearts and minds and stay present we will find the beauty in day to day life. A tea ceremony is a means of connecting or gathering people. A way for people to escape daily chaos that life brings and learn to enjoy the present and the company of others. The act of making tea is not complicated but for generations Japanese men and women have taken a simple concept of making tea and made it feel so special. An art for others to appreciate and enjoy.

In Japan, we feel the connection to nature everywhere. We can feel it in the gardens surrounding the cities that allow people to have a quiet escape, the bath houses, the natural fibers used in the utensils and cookware we eat and drink from, the minimalism and elements of nature in the houses and decor. The culture is simple, thoughtful, and complex all at the same time.  Let’s use this inspiration and guidance in our lives and in our art journals. Staying present, having an open heart, and embracing these imperfections in ourselves, others and in our artwork because these imperfections are what make us all beautiful and unique both as artists and as people.

Below you will find a mixed media art journal tutorial to follow along with. I hope you enjoy!

“The imperfect path your heart guides you along is the perfect path for you.”
— Beth Kempton
